Prayer as Conversation

When we talk about having a conversation with someone, we are talking about communication, a meeting of the minds, an exchange of news or ideas.

When we pray to God in conversation there isn't anything we could say to God that would be news to Him, but we can still exchange ideas and come away with knowledge and understanding we didn't have before.

The difficulty in praying to God in conversation is we know God has all the power and information, but it can feel like we are the ones doing all the talking.

Job expressed this frustration when he sought an audience with God and said "Then call, and I will answer; or let me speak, and you reply to me."

It is easy to get discouraged when we talk to God and don't immediately get the answer we are looking for, but Jesus promises that when we cry out to God in his name, we are heard.

As we come to God in prayer this week, don't be afraid to talk to God about whatever is on your mind, ask Him questions, expect to get an answer, and wait on Him. When you have a conversation with someone do you rush to finish like it is a race or do you wait for the back and forth like it is a tennis match. Wait for God to respond and keep up the conversation even after you get an answer. Remember this prayer of King David in your own prayers.

Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer! Psalm 4:1 ESV

Prayer

Lord, I pray to you for deeper conversations. I don't want to only come to you with little popcorn prayers. I want to praise, worship and honor you with prayer. Help me learn to listen to you better and understand you better. Thank you for having patience with me. I pray all this in Your Son's Heavenly Name. AMEN.
